Visiting Aveyron
Welcome to Aveyron,
Land of many emotions!
Stretching 200 km from North to South, Aveyron is land of many contrasts, that spans over torrents and overflies meadows. At the crossroad of oceanic and Mediterranean influences, the air sweeps through it from all corners.
Lying south of Massif Central, the department splits its affection between Aquitaine, Languedoc and Auvergne. It is a meeting point where northern and south-western (the Autan) winds freely delimit their territories. But History’s alchemy shaped a strong identity, as if to wed the dissimilarities that express our wealth.

In the past decades, car equipment plants have taken over from traditional industries. The town of Laguiole forges knives and pleases taste buds with its star-studded gastronomy. Millau makes gloves for haute couture. From the crests of Levezou to the limestone plateaux of Saint-Affrique, the ewes from Roquefort give the milk of a stunning cheese. Calves from Ségala and cows from Aubrac graze on ancestral hillsides and hilltops, following the same ancestral paths as today’s hikers or pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
Day after day, Aveyron shapes its future and anchors its renewal, while preserving a supreme value: safeguarding natural and architectural heritage.
The people of Aveyron managed to protect their land from aggressions, without ever forgetting entrepreneurship. By opening up to modernity, they understood full well the value of things well done. Many are jealous of such a privilege of silence and friendliness, and long to discover these lands full of strong emotions.
